One of the oldest hounds, with ancestry that dates back to the eighth century, the Bloodhound originates from Belgium and was nurtured by blueblood aristocrats, hence its name. The Bloodhound was registered with the AKC in 1885. Described as a "unique looking dog in a baggy suit," the Bloodhound is one of the oldest breeds of dogs that hunt by scent. Although affectionate, they can possess shy natures, sensitive to kindness or correction by their master. The Bloodhound is the only animal whose evidence is admissible in an American court of law. The ancestry of the modern Bloodhound can be traced back to the monastery of St Huberts. These dogs were called 'Segusius' and were originally used to track wolves, big cats or deer, or to follow the trail of wounded game. When the Normans conquered England in 1066AD they introduced many of their dogs and the St Hubert Hound was one of those brought to England and became known as Bloodhounds; or to be more precise, the black and tan dogs were, the whites were called Talbot Hounds. The modern Bloodhound is not the identical dog of that time but is still called the Chien du St Hubert in Belgium. The first Bloodhound seen in the show-ring in England was in 1871.

General Appearance
The Bloodhound is a very powerful, massive hound with a long muzzle, drooping ears, and loose, wrinkled skin. His jowls and handing skin give the Bloodhound a rather mournful, dignified expression. The neck is very well muscled and has pendulous dewlap. Its back is extraordinarily strong for the dog's size. Powerful shoulders allow the dog to work for long hours without a break. The forelegs are straight, solid and muscular and the skull is very high and prominent. The tail is carried in an elegant curve above the topline of the back. The eyes are set deeply in their sockets. The lower lids of the eyes fall away to reveal part of the inner surface. It has a black nose that sits on the tip of the long muzzle. The folds of the skin are said to aid in holding scent particles. A short, fairly hard coat of hair covers the body.

Temperament
The Bloodhound is a gentle giant of a dog, with a determined nature, powerful stature, and plenty of affection to give out. These are sensitive dogs and are very responsive. They are also sociable creatures, and tend to get on well with children, particularly when raised with them. However, they are large dogs and this should be considered by those that have smaller children that could easily get knocked down and hurt albeit inadvertently. The Bloodhound does have a curious nature and once he gets hold of a scent he will want to follow it, which can sometimes result in landing him in trouble or even danger.

Grooming
The Bloodhound is a medium shedder, and sheds more heavily on a seasonal basis. However, the grooming requirements for the Bloodhound are not demanding, and occasional brushing of the coat will remove the dead hair and keep it looking in good condition. You should also check and clean the ears on a regular basis to reduce the risk of ear infections and to keep them clean.

Health Problems and Life Expectancy
The life expectancy of the Bloodhound is relatively short compared to many other breeds, and is around 7-9 years. A number of health problems and issues are linked to this breed, and this includes ectropion, entropion, bloat and torsion, HD and elbow dysplasia, and thyroid issues.

Activity Level
The Bloodhound needs regular opportunities to romp and play, preferably in a large fenced in area. The Bloodhound has the tendency to overeat so regular exercise is a must if this breed is to stay healthy and active. At least 90 minutes per day is required to keep this dog healthy, happy, and in shape. Bloodhounds do best with acreage and a large area to roam in however can do well if they have an owner that has a regular exercise regimen.
